<p> The construction of the complex started in 1914 and completed in 1933. It constitutes a compound divided into four parts, namely middle courtyard, east courtyard, west courtyard and outer courtyard, each part bearing special distinctive features. The total area covers up to 36.000 square meters. The construction area is 27,000 square meters. This part is the oldest in this palace. In 1912, Zhang Zuolin rented it and took his family members to Fengtian when he was the Lieutenant General of 27 Division. Later at the end of the year of 1913, Zhang Zuolin bought it and the Guild of Jiangsu provice and Zhejiang province in the west of it as well. The old buildings were demolished in the summer of 1914 and the new buildings began to be constructed in the autumn. It was completed in the autumn of 1915 and the family members moved into it after the completion of decoration. </p><p> When the new buildings were completed, Zhang Zuolin had already been promoted to be the governor of Fengtian. People began to call him General Marshal and this place was termed as ‘Gerneral Marshal’s Mansion’ because this is his office and the living place of his family members.</p>
