The beginning of Rap

In the early 70's, a Jamaican DJ known as Kool Herc moved from Kingston to NY's West Bronx. Here he tried to join his Jamaican style of DJ which involved reciting improvised rhymes over the dub versions of his reggae records. Unfortunately, New yorkers weren't into reggae at that time. Thus, Kool Herc adapted his style by singing over the instrumental or percussion sections of the popular songs again and again. Because these breaks were relatively short, he extend them indefinitely by using an audio mixer and two identical records in which he continuously replaced the desired part.

(刚才因为突然有急事,不得已中断,现在继续哈)In those early days, it was fashionable for DJ to express thanks for party goers. This would usually evoke a crazy response from them, who began to call out their own names and slogans. As this developed, the party shouts became more planned as DJs in an effort to be different. Many would add a little twist and custmize these rhymes to make them suitable for the party environment. At that time rap was not yet known as "rap" but called "emceeing".

Why's Rap So Popular?

Rap catchs on because it offers young urban New Yorkers a chance to freely express themselves. More importantly, it is an art from accessible to anyone - a verbal skill that can be practiced and honed to perfection at almost anytime. What's more, rap offered unlimited challenges. There were no real set rules, except to be original and to rhyme on time to the beat of music. Finally,Rap,because of its inclusive aspects, allowed one to accurately and efficiently inject their personality. No two people rapped the same, even when reciting the same rhyme. Many people would try and emulate someone's style, but even that was related to a particular personality.

Hip-Hop is the culture from which rap emerged. Hip-Hop is a lifestyle with its own language, style of dress, music and mind set that is continuously evolving. Nowadays "b boying"and "graffiti" are not as famous as the words "Rap" and "Hip-Hop" that have been used interchangably. However it should be noted that all aspects of "Hip-Hop" culture still exists. They've just evolved onto new levels.

Hip-Hop Dance

Hip-Hop dance is infusing pop culture as never before, moving from street corners and music vidios to fitness centers, dance studios and television show. And now Hollywood has noticed. "Right now dance is the key focus, the main focus of everything going on,"says Shane Sparks, a choreographer from You Got Served and Honey.

The Hip-Hop dance of today is a more choreographed form of street and club dancing,as opposed to the more free-form moves of earlier styles, such as break dancing."Each move now that Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake does take a little bit of this and that from break dancing - locking, popping moves - and blends it all in," says Beto Lopez, a Hip-Hop dancer from Stockton, Calif.

To see how Hip-Hop dance is being mainstreamed, look no further than high schools, so we want to learn how to dance to that,"That 's the music... at school dances, so we want to learn how to dance to that," says Diana Schnabel, a 17-year- old junior in San Hose, Calif. Her high school's drama productions once showed mostly singing and skits, but recently they have been taken over by Hip- Hop dance.
