New Year fireworks spark fire that guts hotel in northeast China

By The Associated Press (CP) – 19 hours ago

BEIJING, China — State media reports say a fire set off by fireworks to celebrate the Lunar New Year destroyed a five-star hotel in northeast China.

The official Xinhua New Agency said the fire gutted the hotel in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning province, before dawn Thursday. There were no causalities.

Xinhua said firefighters had trouble dealing with the fire because their fire engines shot water up only 50 metres (165 feet), while the building was 219 metres (720 feet) tall.

New Year fires are common in China, with the Beijing News saying there were more than 160 small ones in the capital alone. The most famous in recent years destroyed a hotel under construction next to state broadcaster CCTV's iconic headquarters in Beijing in 2009.

Fireworks Spark High-Rise Blaze in China

The Wallstreet Journal

BEIJING—Fireworks ignited a blaze that gutted much of a hotel tower in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang, the second time in two years that the country's Lunar New Year tradition of pyrotechnics has claimed a major building.

City officials said there were no casualties in the fire, which broke out shortly after midnight Thursday in Tower B, an apartment building in the three-building Dynasty Wanxin complex in Shenyang. The fire quickly spread to Tower A, a 219-meter (719 feet) tall building that houses a five-star hotel, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The Shenyang government said in a statement that the fire was triggered by fireworks that ignited material on the exteriors of the buildings. The statement said the fire was extinguished around 9 a.m. Xinhua said further investigation of the incident was underway.

Shenyang police and city news office officials couldn't be reached for comment. Staff at the Royal Wanxin hotel confirmed that there were no injuries from the fire, but declined to elaborate.

The incident comes almost exactly two years after an illegal fireworks display engulfed a tower in the newly built complex of state broadcaster China Central Television in Beijing. The Feb. 9, 2009 blaze destroyed much of the Television Cultural Center building, which was to house a luxury Mandarin Oriental hotel and which sits just next to CCTV's new headquarters, one of the capital's most recognizable buildings.

One firefighter died and eight others were injured in the CCTV blaze, which became a huge scandal for the government's main propaganda outlet. A government investigation into the incident, disclosed by Xinhua in February of last year, found 71 people responsible, including senior officials at the broadcaster. It said that substandard insulation materials in the nearly completed building had also contributed to the fire.

Fireworks have long played a central role in celebrations of the Lunar New Year, which started Thursday. Average citizens in most Chinese cities are allowed to purchase a wide array of sometimes powerful pyrotechnics, which fill the skies of major cities with color and noise on New Year's Eve. Officials in Beijing have somewhat tightened restrictions on fireworks use since the CCTV blaze, but Wednesday night's display in the capital was intense. State media reported there were no major fires in Beijing.

Thursday's fire in Shenyang also comes less than three months after one in Shanghai that killed at least 58 people and injured scores more in a 28-floor residential tower. That blaze, which officials blamed on unlicensed welders' attaching insulation material to meet government energy-efficiency targets, prompted angry public protests.

Major fires had been relatively rare in China compared with some other developing countries, even as it engaged in one of the world's biggest urban construction binges. But the recent incidents have exposed what appear to be serious inadequacies in fire-safety practices.

In the Shanghai fire, firefighters on the ground were initially unable to direct water to the flames in the upper half of the building—though it wasn't especially tall by the standards of China's wealthiest city. Similarly, in Thursday's blaze, water guns mounted on fire engines could jet water only 50 meters high—less than a fourth the height of Tower A—Xinhua said.

According to the Xinhua report, top local officials including Shenyang Mayor Chen Haibo arrived at the site soon after the fire started. It said personnel from the nearby Sheraton Shenyang Lido Hotel were evacuated, but nearby residents were able to stay home. The fire didn't hit a third building in the Dynasty Wanxin complex, Tower C.

The blaze in Shenyang, the capital of China's Liaoning Province, is believed to have started in an apartment complex before spreading to the hotel.

Chinese state media said a fireworks display was the cause of the fire.

The 20-storey Sheraton Shenyang Lido Hotel is the the tallest building in the city.

It meant firefighters had trouble extinguishing the blaze, as they were unable to reach the highest parts of the building.

Around 50 guests were evacuated from their rooms but there were no reports of injuries.

Chinese leaders celebrated the Year of the Rabbit with visits to the drought-stricken north while ordinary citizens rocked city streets with cacophonous fireworks.

Worry about inflation and over-valued property markets did not dampen Beijing residents' enthusiasm for the ultimate in conspicuous consumption -- fireworks that light up the sky and are gone in a puff.

"We spent over 20,000 yuan on fireworks and we have been setting them off for an hour and a half. We've only got one left," said 28-year-old massage parlour worker Li Yuanpeng, who gathered with friends in central Beijing.

"I hope that business will be great and that every employee will have good luck and make a lot of money."

More than 900,000 boxes of fireworks were sold in Beijing even before New Year's Eve, when Chinese gather to eat traditional food with their families before greeting midnight with fireworks that arc high into the sky.

Wayward fireworks caused at least one conflagration -- an apartment complex and the five-star Dynasty Wanxin hotel in the northeastern city of Shenyang, which was gutted shortly after midnight.

No-one was hurt, but the nearby Sheraton Lido hotel was evacuated as firefighters attempted to battle the blaze with hoses that fell far short of the building's upper stories.

Two years ago, a brand-new building belonging to China Central Television in Beijing was destroyed by fireworks so powerful they were illegal.

GRAIN SECURITY

Premier Wen Jiabao visited a drought-stricken region of northern China's Shandong Province, near the hometown of Chinese philosopher Confucius whose ideas are garnering renewed interest from the ruling Communist Party.

Top leaders traditionally highlight an area of policy concern with their New Year's visits. Chinese president Hu Jintao also visited dry fields in northern Hebei province, drawing attention to a drought in the grain-rich plains of the north.

"Drought affects the grain harvest, which is closely connected to grain security and farmers' incomes. I cannot set my mind at ease," Wen said to farmers in Jintun village, near the city of Jiaxiang, before inspecting a reservoir.

"The top priority for our economy this year is to stabilise prices. And grain is the base to realise this goal."

In a speech carried on state media on Wednesday, Wen vowed to fight inflation and property speculation.

Wheat-growing areas in central and northern China have not seen rain for more than 100 days, raising fears of damage to the winter wheat crop.

Hu, who also heads the Communist Party and military, spent New Year's eve with a garrison near the city of Baoding. Hu is expected to begin transferring his titles for a leadership succession in 2012, but may hope to retain influence through the military and other allies after the baton is passed. Beijing, Feb 3 (PTI) A blaze triggered by Chinese new year fireworks gutted a five-star hotel in northeast China today.

No casualties were reported in the fire, which broke out in the morning at the three-building Dynasty Wanxin complex in the city of Shenyang.

The flames erupted in the building''s Tower B, an apartment building, and quickly spread to the adjacent Tower A, which is largely taken up by a five-star hotel, Xinhua news agency reported.

All the 50 people in the hotel were evacuated and the fire was effectively controlled, Shenyang Municipal Public Security Bureau officials told Xinhua.

The third tower in the complex was not affected by the fire.

Police said the fire was apparently triggered by fireworks, which accidentally sparked off the external wall of the buildings.

Further investigation into the cause and losses of the fire is still underway.

Fire engines, whose water guns could jet water only 50 meters high, were helpless at the fire which flamed on the top of Tower A, 219 meters high.

Power supply in the hotel was not cut off, which was said to keep the automatic spray facilities in operation in the building.

Personnel from adjacent five-star Sheraton Shenyang Lido Hotel were evacuated, and residents around the Dynasty Wanxin building mainly stayed at home.

Letting off fireworks on Lunar New Year''s Eve and throughout the festive period is a long-held Chinese tradition based on the belief that the noise will ward off evil spirits and ghosts.

But it is also a dangerous practice, and each year hundreds are reported hurt or killed in China in fire incidents.

The fire broke out at 0:13 am at Tower B, an apartment building of the Dynasty Wanxin building complex, and the flames quickly spread to the adjacent Tower A, which is largely a five-star hotel.

All the 50-odd people in the hotel were evacuated. No casualties are found.

The fire was effectively controlled, Shenyang Municipal Public Security Bureau officials told Xinhua at 4:35 am.

Police said the fire was triggered by fireworks, which accidentally sparked off the external wall of the buildings. Further investigation into the cause and losses of the fire is still underway.

Personnel from adjacent five-star Sheraton Shenyang Lido Hotel were evacuated, and residents around the Dynasty Wanxin building mainly stayed at home.

Top leaders of the province and the city, including Chen Haibo, mayor of Shenyang, arrived at the site soon afterwards to direct efforts to quell the fire.

The Dynasty Wanxin building complex, located in the bustling Qingnian Street of Heping District, comprises of three towers. The fire engulfed Tower A and B, with Tower C intact.

Neujahrsfeuerwerk in China setzte Hotel in Brand
