<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="96%" align="center" border="0"><tbody><tr><td class="nava3" valign="top"><p>France will soon open a consulate-general's office in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning province, French Ambassador to China Herve Ladsous said yesterday.</p><p>"Liaoning and the northeastern Chinese regions have developed rapidly and vigorously, and the opening of the consulate will help boost cooperation between France and China," Ladsous, who is on a short visit to Liaoning, said.</p><p>The office will be located in the Heping district of downtown Shenyang, which is home to consulates of the United States, Japan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Russia and the Republic of Korea.</p><p>It is likely to open in April or May, a source close to the ambassador said.</p><p>Ladsous said France attaches great importance to developing close relationships with Liaoning and other provinces in Northeast China. The establishment of the consulate-general's office in Shenyang will help strengthen exchanges in the fields of economics, trade, culture and education.</p><p>"We hope to enhance cultural cooperation with Liaoning province as well as expanding economic and trade ties," Ladsous said.</p><p>Northeast China is a major petrochemical base and home to two of the country's biggest oilfields, Daqing and Liaohe.</p><p>Experts have said the new consulate office will help French companies such as Michelin and Total become more involved in the region.</p><p>"This is the EU's first diplomatic office in northeastern China and we hope it will serve as the platform for people from all walks of life," Ladsous said.</p><p>He said he would like to see the opening of an Alliance Francaise center - one of the world's largest French-language schools - in Shenyang.</p><p>Lu Liyan, a teacher of French at a college in the city, said such a facility would help students achieve a better understanding of all things French.</p><p>France already has consulates in Shanghai, Wuhan, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.</p><p>(China Daily)<br/></p></td></tr></tbody></table>
