A "frost festival" featuring a carnival, a lantern parade and a large fair, opened Sunday in Shenyang in northeast China. The festival is based on the tradition of "Chuan Guandong" -- which celebrates the exodus of Chinese farmers into the northeast frontier in the early 20th century. <p> The month-long "2009 Shenyang International Frost Festival" is being held at Qipaishan. Tourists can enjoy ice surfing, a frost slide, motorcycle rides in an ice world, icehouse restaurants and a Russian circus.These activities give tourists a feel for the excitement felt by the people who migrated to northeast China in the early 20th century. </p><p> Soundbite: a tourist “This year's lanterns are more beautiful than in previous years.
