The Subway project, the biggest investment and the longest project in scheduled duration in the history of urban construction was formally started on November 18. The long cherished dream of the people of Shenyang has finally become a reality.  The Subway is fast, comfortable and will serve as an advanced traffic tool in the heart of Shenyang. In the eyes of decision makers, the subway is not only the prelude for Shenyang’s three dimensional traffic net, but to release traffic pressure as well as laying a solid foundation for the city’s further expansion. <>After five-years of consistent efforts, Shenyang finally received this honorary title. At China’s second city forest forum held on August 23, Shenyang was honored with the title of “National Forest City”, the second city after Guiyang.
Five years ago, Shenyang’s lacked water resources and green areas. Shenyang launched the largest green campaign in it’s urban history five years ago with a total investment of 5.5 billion Yuan, resulting in the planting of more than 190million trees and an addition of 69 square kilometers of green space, which improved Shenyang’s ecological environment, and improved the overall strength of the city. Since the successful bid for the World Horticulture Exposition last year, Shenyang has taken on challenging preparatory work, and this year the pace of progress of preparatory work is quickening. To date, one hundred gardens as well as four theme buildings have been virtually completed.  The underlying structure and logistical areas for the Shenyang World Horticulture Exposition have taken initial shape. Shenqi road which was expanded to a 2-way six lane road has become the city’s main route to the suburbs.

Shenyang made a thorough renovation to the No 2 ring road after stopping toll fee usage. The ring road became the main road in the city when it was completed on October 31. The renovation expanded the function and perfected the traffic flow and connected the South Hunhe shore area and North Hunhe shore areas.

The first phase of renovation to Ding Xiang Lake was completed this year. The lake surface area was expanded from 1.42 square kilometers to 2.76 square kilometers. Besides Ding Xiang lake, other lakes including Long Tan lake, Chong Shan Road lake, Luxun lake and Qing Nian lake were also completed this year. The completion of water system projects ahead of schedule sets a solid basis for Shenyang to start large water system construction.

The South bank of Hunhe ends it’s unprotected history. This summer, the city government made a large investment in the south bank of the Hun he and built a 22.3 kilometer long anti flood levee which has a 50 years anti flood ability. The levee will relive the flood worries of residents along the south bank of the Hunhe.
