A 45-meter-high thermometer, believed to be China's biggest of its kind, has been put into use in Shenyang.
<>"The thermometer shows the air temperature and embellishes the city at the same time. It is a work of art," said designer Jiang Xinhua, a lighting engineer with a local company.

<>The huge thermometer is fixed outside the building of the provincial observatory, stretching from the ground floor to the 18th floor. People can read the temperature clearly from 500 to 800 meters away.

<>The sensor of the thermometer sends temperature signals to a computer which shows them in the thermometer, according to Jiang. It shows a temperature between minus 35 degrees Celsius and 40 degrees.
